The inmates alleged poor food quality, lack of facilities, and mental harassment by the headmistress. Despite long-standing issues, no authorities addressed their grievances, forcing the children to leave the hostel on foot. While the WEO and school officials later intervened to stop the students, the incident has raised serious questions about the safety and administration of government school hostels in Odisha.
